Subject: [Updated] Is there a permanent solution for % creeping into To: field?
Feedback Type: Problem
Product Area: Notes Client
Technical Area: User Interface
Platform: ALL
Release: 8.5.3
Reproducible: Always

Hello,

this is an occurring issue that happens on Notes/Domino and I would like to see a permanent solution to it. I have seen this issue in 10+ Domino installations at different customers.

This particular problem occurs in Lotus Traveler 8.5.3FP2.

Sometimes traveler adds a % into the names when user sends and it breaks sending of the mail. And it usually shows up in a reply to all, which makes the users confused about who have received the mail.

Example anders.aslund@company.se turns into anders.aslund%company._se@company.se, and there is other variants of this. It is a totally broken mail address and Notes should not create an address like this.

Traveler seems to be the most sensitive about this, and I believe that in at least a couple of cases it has been the originator of the evil %.

I am going to create a PMR about this irritating problem (since users complain loudly about this every time it shows up). But I wonder if anybody else have a idea/solution for this?

Also, but it is another question. Is it possible to make Lotus Notes/iNotes _only_ use SMTP addresses? This would permanently solve the issue with % which is a great pain.

[Update 20120522]
I have spent some time debugging this and also got help from IBM Lotus Support.

Ok, here it is. If Traveler is involved and users synchronized contacts than there can be issues with contacts that is not correctly saved. When a user is using these contacts on the Traveler device there can be errors, like extra spaces and such sneaking into the TO and CC fields. Especially if user tries to correct the address.

I think that at lease one of my problems was with this. But earlier the users have complained that even internal addresses have failed in Traveler. This is then also probably because some strange address gets saved by mistake.

[Update 2]
Hmm, earlier in the conversation thread all contacts were correct. Can it be that Traveler checks the contacts when the user does a reply-to-all and replace them? I know that Lotus Notes client can mess up contacts in the type-ahead and maybe traveler does the same.
